How to Plan a Themed Cake Smash

If you have a cake crumb of an idea for your baby’s smash but don’t know exactly how it will come together don’t worry. One of the things I love about my job is the ability to be creative and bring my client’s visions to life. As much as I love a simple birthday smash, it is really fun to add elements to enhance the photos that tell your family’s story.

1. Get Inspired!

This client came to me with one word, “carnival”. This had meaning for them so I was happy to see how we could incorporate this theme while still letting baby be the focus. After all, we want the birthday baby to be the star of the show, not the decor. My goal was to include the theme but also keep the set-up simple and in-line with my style. I started on Pinterest to do some research on Carnival colors, elements, and cakes.

2. Make a Plan

From the first search I knew the color palette was going to be the three primary colors red, blue, and yellow. The main elements that stood out to be as uniquely “carnival” were banners, popcorn, tents, and balloons.

I considered getting a tent backdrop for this session, but ultimately decided that a busy backdrop would take the focus away from the adorable subject. The direction I wanted to go was to include all of the elements of a carnival celebration with a more minimalist approach.

3. The Cake

I wanted to use the cake to complement the theme! One of the benefits of my cake smash sessions is that the cake is included. This means that I have control over what it will look like and can choose how to design it to work with the overall look. As always, I reached out to Sweet DC and she executed the perfect cake. Of course it not only looked good, but tasted delicious too!

4. The Fun Part

I pulled it all together and love how it turned out! The final step was for the baby to enjoy the session! This little guy had the most infectious smile. In addition to the cake smash, I alway take some ‘pre-cake’ photos as well. I want to make sure you have personality images captured that document your baby as they are (not covered in cake!).

5. Enjoy the Memories:

Wow, that was fun! Now it’s time to figure out WHAT you are going to do with all these gorgeous images and HOW you will honor them! This is the point of taking photos in the first place, right? Enjoy them. Preserve them.

USB’s fail, hard drives are damaged, and that backup on your iPhone is not reliable. Think of printed images as insurance for your memories.

The final step of the session is your Viewing & Ordering appointment. Virtual or In-Person. We work together to figure out the products or display items that are right for your family based on needs, budget, style, and lifestyle. I take the guesswork out of the process and customize your artwork just for you. Small room, large wall, can’t decide …. no problem! Both Digital and Digital+Product packages are offered with a variety of professional items created to stand the test of time.

Your vision for your baby’s milestone session will be brought to life and then transformed into works of art for you to enjoy this moment for years to come.
